Master the Basic Coaching Model…an entry point

The basic coaching model emphasizes a Socratic approach to professional development, where the coach learns to ask powerful questions that help the client transform their old beliefs into new ones, and opening up new potential.

This is a great start, yet does not specifically clarify the methods needed to unlock the complex patterns of human behavior needed to coach in the sophisticated corridors of corporate life.

The basic coaching skills that are taught in coaching schools today are essential, but they don’t quite complete the skill set needed to hone the instincts of the advanced coach, so mastery is hard earned after many years of practice. We know this from experience, so we seek coaches that have reached the highest levels of coaching mastery and enhance their skills with method that transcends normal insight.

At Tilt Academy, we take coaching seriously and provide advanced coach training that helps coaches become Transcendent Leaders themselves. Through increased self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-leadership, our graduates learn how to get results through advanced coaching skills that utilize the whole-person approach adding great depth to their instinctual nature. This means results in half the time.

…Then Transcend with the Bold

Our view is that coaching from the basic model without enough experience may lead to an agenda designed by the coach who, if not fully self-aware, will ask leading questions. Therefore the agenda is hidden beneath a technique that may not be authentic until the coach matures into more transcendent mastery levels. The “purist” Socratic approach reflects a clinical view of coaching and has yielded negligible results in the field of therapy as well. Anyone who experiences this method from the inexperienced coach, will feel the hierarchy of coach as all-knowing expert, trying to bring the client to a realization of their own through painfully repetitive questioning.

To the intelligent executive, this feels frustrating and a lot like a time hog with their most precious commodity—time. Instead, they want a coach who has been there, has wisdom, ideas, real stories, real failures, real insights that are shared with open vulnerability, authenticity and trust. No one is superior in that kind of relationship. It creates a mutual learning environment where both parties are enriched by the experience. Transcendent coaches, bring their full presence to the coaching relationship so the experience of working with them is rich and full.

Recipe for Success

Any technique can work, but only if it is in harmony with universal and timeless principles. Such principles must be grasped through the development of consciousness in the mind first. Good, clear discipline in the skill of inquiry creates the ballast for fixing your other senses and centering them. When you fix your mind on the GUT you can stand firm. When you fix your mind on the HEART you can feel connection, compassion and unity. When you fix your mind on the SPIRIT, you can flex and change with the ever-altering universe. MIND is the key to wondrous power and clarity of purpose. Our potential is limitless, beyond our imagination when we learn the Four Disciplines of Acceptance, Inquiry, Responsibility and Context all taught in the Tilt Coaching Model.

We believe the most successful executive coaches have been successful leaders first, who then became coaches and actively brought their experience to bear with their clients. These coaches “get it”: they have been in the trenches themselves and instinctively understand the complicated web of corporate relationships and strategies. These coaches have blended the Socratic method learned in coaching models and combined it with the kind of challenging agenda that their fast moving clients will find in the corporate arena. The client is refreshingly delighted with an egalitarian relationship of support and challenge by a thought-provoking coach who can work as an accountability partner to take them to the next level.

As past leaders, these coaches naturally combine mentoring, coaching, training, facilitation, and industry-related consultation to provide today’s leaders with a well-rounded, supportive experience and they know how to shift between those roles comfortably. Active partnering represents a clear connection in the relationship between leader and coach. Anything outside of former executives or leaders as coaches won’t cut it with today’s corporate leaders. You have to have wallowed in the deepest, darkest corporate mud holes (and survived) in order to even appreciate the challenges a leader might face.

The 24×7 information overload and strong push for work/home balance means today’s leaders want their coaching in plain language that is relevant to their experience. Theories, models, and methods should be used by the successful coach as a synthesized methodology to strengthen their instinctive approach rather than replacing it. This translates into “coaching as partnership” and takes coaching to the higher levels of consciousness.
